KOLLAM: Minister for Fisheries S. Sarma on Monday said the State Government had released Rs. 2.5 crore on diesel for mechanised fishing boats. Talking to reporters, he said 3,487 boat owners would benefit from the allocation. The subsidy is at the rate of Rs.15,000 a boat. Asked about the stand the State Government would take in the Supreme Court on the issue of trawling ban, Mr. Sarma said the State Government's submission would be that the ban should not go beyond 45 days. He said the Union Government had been apprised of the State Government's stand. "The Centre has assured a favourable stand," the Minister said. He said a petition on the issue has been submitted to the Prime Minister's Office and talks held with the Governments of Goa and Karnataka to favour the 45-day ban on trawling before the apex court.
