Government mulls digital meters in autorickshaws
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD:
The Government has sought one year's time to replace existing mechanical meters in autorickshaws with digital meters as part of the measures to check tampering by drivers.
A final notification on installation of digital meters in the three-wheelers throughout the State would be issued within a month, Transport Minister Kanna Laxminarayana told the Assembly during question hour on Monday.
He said a preliminary notification and the G.O. on introduction of the new system had been issued a couple of months ago. An official committee was appointed to study the functioning and funding of the scheme in other States.
Panel makes a study
The panel had visited Delhi, Pune and Chennai in this regard. Mr. Laxminarayana said that 4,591 cases of tampering had been booked against drivers this year.
The Minister was replying to a question by Congress member Malreddy Ranga Reddy who felt that digital meters would solve the problem of differential fares for the same distance of travel.
