HYDERABAD: The British Library organised a pre-departure briefing for the benefit of the students pursuing higher education in the UK, on Monday. The next briefing will be held in January. The entry clearance officer from the British Deputy High Commission, Sue Ming Lie, addressed the students on the visa documentation process. Students were also given a pre-departure kit containing information on culture, living standards, etc. in UK. The briefing was attended by 65 students. The number of students pursuing higher education in the UK is going up by 25 per cent every year. Currently, there are 17,000 Indian students studying across 100 universities in the country.
New initiative
The rise in the increase of students going to the UK is directly being attributed to a new initiative called Prime Minister's Initiatives (PMI) introduced by British Prime Minister Tony Blair. The PMI came into effect from this year and the batch of 2007 will reap its benefits. The PMI benefits include one-year extension of visa to get a work experience for the students passing out from England and Wales. Pass-outs from Scotland to receive two-year-work permit, whereas people on students' visa being allowed to work for 20 hours a week, according to K. Sudhakar Goud, Manager of the British Library. Management and IT-related courses are among the preferred choices. "Living expenses and tuition fees comes to about Rs. 10 to 12 lakhs a year which is 45% cheaper than USA or Australia," he added.
