Thiruvananthapuram: The Government will distribute Onam kits free to 20 lakh ration-card holders in below the poverty line and Antyodaya Anna Yojana categories. At a press conference here on Monday, Minister for Civil Supplies C. Divakaran said the Government would have to incur an additional expenditure of Rs.6 crore for the purpose. A State-level function to launch the scheme would be inaugurated here by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on Wednesday. The Minister said the kits would be distributed through Maveli stores, Labham markets and Sabari supermarkets from August 30. Each kit would have 1 kg of rice, half a kg of gram, and a packet of vermicelli. Select ration shops, panchayat offices, anganwadis or child welfare centres would distribute the kits in areas not having Supplyco outlets on a 2-km radius. In tribal and coastal belts, tribal welfare centres and Matsyafed would be the respective suppliers. The Minister said Supplyco had made arrangements to distribute the kits in plantations.
