MANGALORE: The Academic Council of Mangalore University at its meeting on Monday unanimously opposed the Inter-University Board's (IUB) decision to change rules in admission to postgraduate courses in universities. The council resolved that the IUB should re-consider its decision. It also decided to close down Vijayalakshmi First Grade College, Balele, Kodagu, from the academic year 2006-07. The council gave its consent to the revised draft statute governing the autonomy to colleges, institutions and units coming under the university.
Committee
It decided to constitute a committee, headed by the dean of the Faculty of Arts, to sort out some issues in the selection of specialisation in Master of Social Work (MSW) course and giving weightage for students of Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) course. The meeting was presided over by K. M. Kaveriappa, Vice-Chancellor. Dr. Kaveriappa told the meeting that the IUB at its 43rd meeting had decided that the universities could follow the 50:40:10 model while admitting students for postgraduate courses. As per it, 50 per cent of the postgraduate seats in a university should be reserved for graduates of that university, 40 per cent of seats for graduates of other universities in Karnataka and 10 per cent seats for students from universities outside Karnataka. He said that in May the Syndicate of Mangalore University had opposed the IUB's decision. The Syndicate gave six reasons for not accepting the decision. The reasons given by the Syndicate was tabled in the House. To this, members of the Academic Council said they endorsed the reasons given by the Syndicate to reject the IUB's decision. The meeting decided that it was not possible to maintain a common academic calendar by universities. The quality of evaluation differed from one university to the other. If the IUB's decision was to be implemented each course should have at least 40 students. Otherwise, many students would be deprived of reservation. The council decided that the present system of admission to PG courses should continue. Dr. Kaveriappa said that the president of Balele Centre Education Society, Kodagu, had requested the university to permit the transfer of seven students of final B.A. course of Vijayalakshmi First Grade College, managed by the society, to Cauvery Degree College, Gonikoppal, as the former was not getting enough students. The authorities of Cauvery college had agreed to admit those students. Hence, the Vijayalakshmi First Grade College would be closed down.
