CHENNAI: Two jeeps have been added to the breakdown squad of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation. The vehicles fitted with wireless sets were introduced last week.

According to the MTC authorities, the jeeps are intended to attend to minor repairs of the fleet of buses in service and to rectify the faults immediately. The Corporation already has nearly two-dozen breakdown squad vehicles.

But, as they were big ones, it becomes difficult for them to reach spots where the buses were stopped, the authorities said.

A driver and a mechanic will be attached to each vehicle. The jeep would immediately leave for the spot on hearing about a breakdown. One vehicle patrols Kamarajar Salai, while the other vehicle is being operated along Anna Salai.

Two sets of crew are assigned to the jeeps, with one set reporting for a 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. shift and the other on duty between 1.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m.

The vehicle on Kamarajar Salai covers the road up to the Ayyappan temple beyond Foreshore Estate in the south from the Secretariat in the north. The other vehicle on Anna Salai, covers stretch from Teynampet signal in the south to War Memorial in the north.

A crewmember in the squad said on an average they were attending four calls a day. The authorities are planning to introduce more such vehicles to attend to technical problems
