Petrol bunk cashier arrested for embezzlement

He siphoned off Rs. 55 lakh: police

CHENNAI: A petrol bunk cashier was arrested here on Monday on charges of embezzling Rs. 55 lakh.

The City Crime Branch (CCB) police said the cashier Gopal alias Gopalakrishnan (28) of Villupuram, a resident of Porur, had been working in a petrol bunk on Arcot Road, Kodambakkam, for the last 10 years.

Mr. Gopal, who was handling bank transactions on behalf of the firm during the last three years, siphoned off cash at regular intervals, the police said.

Morevoer, he had taken an overdraft from a nationalised bank of Rs.28 lakh in the name of the owner.

Gopal could not have obtained the loan without the connivance of a senior level officer, an investigating officer said. He added that Mr. Gopal had been charged with forging his employer's signature in the loan application and withdrawing the money.

Based on his statement, a special police team visited his hometown and identified landed property valued at Rs.5 lakh, which he had bought with the stolen money.

He had also lent Rs.5 lakh to his employees for interest and purchased electronic gadgets like colour television, laptop among others.

Internal inquiry

The embezzlement came to light when a cheque issued by the firm bounced because of insufficient funds. An internal inquiry led to Gopal, who was arrested following a complaint by the bunk managaer, Murugan, a senior officer said.

Cases under Sections 408, 420, 465, 468 and 471 of the Indian Penal Code have been registered against Gopal, who has been remanded to custody, police added.
