Cash recovered within minutes of robbery

Staff Reporter

Thanks to an alert sounded to traffic police

CHENNAI : In what could have been reported as yet another crime in the metropolis turned out to be an instant catch for the police on Monday.

A 32-year-old man identified as Tamizhselvan of Keezhkattalai near here was engaged by a private agency as collection agent to carry cash from business establishments and remit it in banks and finance companies on a daily basis.

According to the police, Tamizhselvan was carrying the previous day's collection of Rs. 5.43 lakh in cash received from a pizza shop, which has a chain of outlets in various pockets in the city. As he was nearing the Sixth Avenue, 12th Main Road in Anna Nagar, two persons on a motorcycle reportedly waylaid him and robbed him of cash, flaunting a sharp edged weapon.

Immediately, he informed the Thirumangalam police, who, in turn, alerted the city control room within minutes.

Incidentally, the Vadapalani traffic police were checking two-wheelers on the 100 feet road. As the motorcycle-borne persons had no proper documents including licence, the police personnel were enquiring discreetly and even issued a notice.

A head-constable, who was listening to an alert received on his walkie-talkie, suspected the duo carrying a huge bag. Yet, the two persons, who were giving contradictory statements, sensed trouble. Leaving the booty behind, they escaped from the scene. Despite a hot chase, the two ran away and got onto a waiting motorcycle on Mosque Street in Vadapalani.

The police found Rs. 5.43 lakh cash in the bag intact. Verification of the registration number of the two-wheeler was found fake.

The Thirumangalam police are investigating.
