Sudden influx of patients with fever
Staff Reporter
TAMBARAM
: There has been a sudden increase in the number of poor people visiting the Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital, more popularly known as Chromepet GH, complaining of high fever and acute body ache and pain at the joints.
According to official reports, at least 2,000 people, mostly from Chromepet, Pallavaram, Nagalkeni, Pammal and Anakaputhur visited the hospital on Sunday and Monday with the complaints. They left after being administered tablets.
However, more than 75 people have been admitted to the hospital. In the absence of adequate beds, people have been lying on straw mats on the floor.
Though officials of the Health Department of Kancheepuram district said adequate steps were being taken jointly with other government departments, activists said they were not enough. Officials said arrangements were being made in primary health centres, for instance in Pozhichalur, to treat patients with high fever and body pain.
V. Santhanam, president of New Colony Residents Welfare Society said voluntary organisations would only be too glad to assist, but the health department and local bodies must take the lead in conducting awareness camps.
