HYDERABAD: A jilted lover hacked to death his 19-year-old former girlfriend in her house in Tappachabutra here on Monday night.

The victim, Rani was alone in the house near Darbar Mysamma temple in Karvan when the accused, Kannaiah Singh, 26, walked in around 6.30 p.m. wielding a sword.

"Opposite the girl's house there is a gurudwara where Singh used to work as a part-time electrician. He grabbed a sword from the gurudwara and rushed to her house," Tappachabutra Inspector M.S. Venugopal Rao said. Rani's parents Tulasidas and Gangabai had gone out and she was stitching a dress when Singh entered the house.

He started stabbing her indiscriminately , the Inspector explained. She died on the spot. The victim's aunt and neighbour Neelabai tried to come to the rescue of Rani on seeing Singh walking inside with the sword.

But by the time she reached the place, Singh had killed the girl. He threatened to attack Neelabai too and she fled from the scene.

According to police, Singh was a resident of AC Guards. He fell in love with Rani after meeting her at the gurudwara some two years ago.

"However, the girl started avoiding him after she was betrothed to a man hailing from Maharashtra. Singh reportedly slipped into depression on learning about her engagement," Mr. Rao said.

The accused ran away leaving the sword at the scene. A hunt is on for him.
