Head constable held for `stealing' gold chain

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The Ghatkesar police on Monday arrested their colleague and head constable N. Pandaiah on charge of stealing a gold chain in a village of his police station area.

According to SI Mohd. Ghouse, the head constable had abstained from duties for the past 10 days without permission. The arrested policeman lives near Buggabai in Ghatkesar. Around 1 p.m., he went to Oushapur village and knocked on the door of a house. The inmates of the house, except an elderly woman, had gone out.

"Pandaiah had met the woman's grandson Tillu while working in the village on election duty," the SI said. When she told him that Tillu was not at home, the policeman allegedly barged in, secured key of the almirah after threatening her and took a gold chain weighing one tola.

Later, the family members and villagers caught the policeman, thrashed him and handed over him to his colleagues.
