Police, excise officials to conduct joint raids

Checking of vehicles to be intensified to prevent liquor smuggling

KOCHI: District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish has directed the Police and Excise departments to organise joint inspections during Onam in places where trade in illicit liquor is suspected.

Liquor shops and bars should be made to follow the time regulation in sales.

Addressing a district-level people's committee meeting for prevention of production and sale of illicit liquor, he suggested that inspections in the western regions of the city be intensified.

Under the directives, checking of vehicles on National and State highways and Main Central Road will be intensified for preventing smuggling of liquor into the district.

The two departments will assist the Forest Department in curtailing the possibility of illicit liquor trade at tourist spots such as Paniyelipporu in forest areas. Inspections at check posts in the district will be intensified.

Revenue Divisional Officer K.G. Raju and Assistant Excise Commissioner V.T. Devassia participated in the meeting.

The police, excise, revenue and forest officials have held 701 surprise checks and filed 450 abkari cases in the district between July 25 and August 18. Two cases related to possession of ganja have also been filed.
