Toddy tappers' plea for liquor policy

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India (CPI)-affiliated Andhra Pradesh Toddy Tappers' Association has criticised the extension of the liquor policy by three months, which was causing severe hardship to the tappers. While demanding a permanent policy, it wanted the Government to take steps for reopening toddy shops that had been closed following the implementation of regulation that there were no palm trees within 50-km range in the city.

At a meeting here on Monday, the association said the closure of toddy shops had rendered a large number of tappers jobless and led to the suicide of 12 persons.

It wanted payment of ex-gratia along with implementation of insurance scheme. M. Dharma Biksham, former MP, presided.
