Move to privatise electricity boards flayed

Staff Reporter

"It will deprive consumers from getting quality power"

MADURAI: The attempt by the Central Government to privatise the electricity boards will only deprive the consumers from getting quality electricity, according to Akhtar Hussain, general secretary, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyut Mazdoor Maha Sangh.

Briefing presspersons, here on Sunday, he said that the Government's move in this direction had weakened the boards in many States. Inviting private participation would pose problems to the consumers. It would also encourage withdrawal of subsidies, which might hit hard those receiving power at subsidised tariff rates, he said. Besides, the consumers might have to face inflated tariff.

Series of agitations

The Sangh would launch series of agitations if the Central Government persisted with the endeavour, he said.

R. Murali Krishnan, general secretary, Bharathiya Electricity Employees Federation, who was present, said: "The Tamil Nadu Government withholding the proposal to provide special grade status to the eligible inspectors of assessment (assessors) of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has demoralised the staff concerned." He said that his federation, affiliated to Bharathiya Mazdoor Sangh and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyut Mazdoor Maha Sangh, planned to stage a series of demonstrations in support of this demand.
