NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday declared that a new University would be opened in Delhi as soon as land is made available. Speaking at the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee office here, she also called upon the party workers to start preparations for the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections in right earnest and help the Congress-backed National Students' Union of India (NSUI) secure another emphatic win in the all-important polls. Stating that new colleges had been opened but the rush of students was so much that Delhi University was unable to accommodate all the aspirants, the Chief Minister said efforts were being made by her Government to open a new university to meet the needs of the students from Delhi. Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ram Babu Sharma also exhorted the party MLAs, Municipal Councillors and workers to start working for ensuring victory of the Congress-backed candidates in the upcoming DUSU elections. Mr. Sharma said since Delhi was a centre for excellence in education and Delhi University was one of the best in the country, DUSU elections assume great significance since it holds the promise of producing future leaders for both Delhi and the country. Asserting that the student community had been reposing faith in the NSUI for the past many years, as the student wing has been ensuring better discipline on the campus, Mr. Sharma said the union had also been playing an important role in promoting responsible leadership along with quality education. With the Centre and the Delhi Government sanctioning enough funds for the students and encouraging them to pursue courses in management, computers, information technology and mass communication, he said efforts had been made by the Congress and the NSUI to provide more opportunities to the students and guide them on the right path. Union Minister Oscar Fernandes said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi had given special thrust to education and the Congress Government had enhanced the allocation for education to improve the education delivery system. "Nearly 12 crore children are benefiting from the mid-day meal scheme and new colleges have been opened in Delhi," he said.
