The Centre's denial of security clearance for the Vizhinjam container terminal project has unleashed a hornet's nest in the city. In an unprecedented display of unity for a cause, political parties, trade unions, youth organisations and non-Governmental organisations across the spectrum have joined the clamour to get the project approved by the Centre. The shrill cry for the project was triggered by the two MPs from the district, Varkala Radhakrishnan and Pannian Ravindran, who staged a protest in front of Parliament. It did not take much time for the protest to become a major movement. Realising the public mood, the Opposition parties have also rallied behind the protests and expressed solidarity with the Government's efforts to bring the project back on track. For once, the Government and the Opposition seem to be speaking in one voice. It remains to be seen whether it is an indicator of good times ahead for the political landscape of the State.
