ERODE: The problem of pollution that plagues this textile town, house to a number of tanneries as well, had to be solved with immediate effect. In this regard, Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) had a role to play in helping dyeing and tanning units set up effluent treatment plant (ETP), said Collector D. Karthikeyan on Monday at the inaugural function of the Bank's Erode branch.
Expertise
"As individual units, many of them find it difficult to afford an ETP. However, they are looking for ways to do it. For this SIDBI can assist them. And, the district administration will be happy to associate itself with such a project,'' he said.
Suggestion
In response to the suggestion, N. Balasubramanian, Chairman and Managing Director, SIDBI, said "the idea of a special purpose vehicle to facilitate creation of an ETP could be looked into." For that, they had the expertise required and funds, too, should not be a problem, he added.
Agro-based industries
Suggesting the bank to look beyond textiles in Erode, R. Balakrishnan, Chairman and Managing Director, Tamil Nadu Magnasite Ltd., said agro-based industries, too, should be developed in the town and district, which had a good agricultural base. "The Bank can perhaps look at providing a platform for selling products of agro-based industries, something on the lines of what the State Government has done to farmers in Uzhavar Sandhai."
Exports
In that regard, the services of district administration could be roped in, he suggested. G. Sundaram, president, Erode District Small Industries Association, said the Bank would help the town's industries go the Coimbatore and Tirupur way - a hub for woven exports. G. Balakrishnan, president, Tamil Nadu Small and Tiny Industries Association, K. M. Nair, Zonal Chief, Southern Zone, SIDBI, and E. Ramesh Malarvannan, DGM, SIDBI participated.
