FOR THEIR RIGHTS: Pondicherry State Handloom Weavers Union holding a rally on Tuesday in Pondicherry seeking settlement of their demands.
Pondicherry: Members of the Pondicherry Handloom Weavers Union (led by the All India Coordination Committee of Trade Unions) took out a rally from Muthialpet on Tuesday seeking settlement of their grievances. The participants urged the administration to ensure that the weavers were paid wages in keeping with the quantum of work they put in. There should be full-fledged implementation of welfare legislation to protect handloom weavers.
Separate department
All handloom weavers living below poverty line should be issued red colour ration cards, so that they could draw the benefits from various Government welfare schemes. A separate department for Handloom Weavers should be created. President of the AICCTU S. Balasubramanian, its vice president P. Sankaran, the secretary, State Handloom Weavers Union, K. Murugan and host of others from the AITUC, Anna Trade Union and a few other organisations addressed the participants in the rally and at the demonstration held in Bharathi Park, opposite the Assembly premises.
