CHENNAI: Loyola Whites (Chennai) successfully defended the ball badminton title and lifted the Kumara Raja of Chettinad Cup at the Bertram memorial tournaments, organised by Loyola College, here on Tuesday. Kovai Kalaimagal College (Coimbatore) took the second place, while St. Joseph's College of Engineering (Chennai) finished third. In the last of the semifinal league matches, Loyola defeated St. Joseph's College of Engineering 29-17, 29-27. St. Joseph's took early lead in both the sets but failed to capitalise on it. Up 27-21 in the second set, St. Joseph's missed out on a chance to level the match. Loyola made full use of the opportunity and won the last eight points to clinch the game and match. In chess, Utham Sharma (Guru Nanak) leads the table with 6.5 points at the end of the seventh round. The results: ball badminton: Final: Loyola Whites (Chennai); semifinal league: Loyola bt St. Joseph's College of Engineering 29-17, 29-27; Kovai Kalaimagal College bt PSG College of Arts and Science 29-15, 29-17.
