THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kottayam was struggling at 84 for four in reply to Pathanamthitta's first innings total of 217 on the opening day of the South Zone under-19 inter-district cricket tournament at the Vellayani Agriculture College ground on Tuesday. Pathanamthitta's innings was held together by Nripin P. Nair (40), who shared two vital partnerships with Jibin Simon (39) and Sibi Kumar (31). Kottayam's Viswajith Bahuleyan picked four wickets for 10. In another match, Kollam was restricted to 224 in its first innings by Alappuzha. In reply, Alappuzha was 58 for one at stumps. The scores: Pathanamthitta 217 in 68.4 overs (Nripin P. Nair 40, Viswajith Bahuleyan four for 10) vs. Kottayam 84 for four in 19 overs. Kollam 224 in 74.1 overs (Zulfikar 47, Dinu 43) vs. Alappuzha 58 for one in 23 overs.
Kannur makes 271
At Thalassery, host Kannur scored 271 for nine from the allotted 90 overs in its first innings on the opening day of the North Zone u-19 inter-district cricket championship match against Wayanad on Tuesday. The scores: Kannur 271 for nine in 90 overs (Javad Backer 67 not out, Rahul Sashi 61, K. Rishad 36 not out, Anoop three for 36) vs. Wayanad.
Six-wkt. haul by Nithin
At Kochi, Swantons CC medium-pacer Nithin took six for 78 as Century CC made 254 for nine in its allotted 55 overs in the second semifinal of the 18th K.T.R. Varma memorial cricket tournament at the KRL Oval, Ambalamugal, on Tuesday. In reply, Swantons made 34 for one in six overs. The two-dayer concludes on Wednesday. The scores: Century 254 for nine in 55 overs (Jayaraj 87, Sanal Lazar 46, Nithin six for 78) vs. Swantons 34 for one in six overs.
Muraleedharan wins
Former National `A' player M.B. Muraleedharan, with 6.5 points from seven rounds, won the P.K. Varma memorial open chess tournament, organised in connection with the Atham celebrations, at Tripunithura. P.V. Girish finished runner-up while P.A. Ajmal and State women's champion Nimmy George took the third and fourth positions. P.V.N. Namboothiripad, chess historian, gave away the prizes.
Venue shifted
The Kerala State inter-club athletic championship, which was scheduled to be held at Thrissur in September, has now been shifted to Thiruvananthapuram. The event has also been advanced by a day and will now be conducted at LNCPE, Thiruvananthapuram, on September 8 and 9.
Swimming meet postponed
The Mahatma Gandhi University swimming championship, which was scheduled to begin at the St. Thomas College pool in Pala on August 21, will now begin at the same venue on August 25.
