Corrections and Clarifications

In the Agencies (PTI, UNI, ANI) report "He performed from Red Fort on First Republic Day" (August 22, 2006), it was stated that shehnai maestro [Bismillah Khan] came into the limelight when he performed "Raga Kafi" from the Red Fort on the country's first Republic Day celebration. Another report on the same page, "Award in memory of Bismillah Khan", said: "Ever since he played the instrument from the ramparts of the Red Fort on August 15, 1947, the Ustad came to be considered as the true embodiment of the `Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb.'" A reader wondered which one was right. On the eve of independence on August 15, 1947, Bismillah Khan played the shehnai at the Red Fort, at Jawaharlal Nehru's request. On the first Republic Day too, it was Bismillah Khan who was in the limelight (at the Red Fort) when he performed "Raga Kafi".

The report "Case against son false: Barnala" (August 20, 2006) said that the Punjab Governor is Lt. Gen. (Retd.) S.F. Rodrigues. It should have been Gen. (Retd.) S.F. Rodrigues.

A reader says that the report "Jet belly-lands, no casualties" (August 22, 2006) was incorrect in having referred to the aircraft, the IAF's Kiran, as a fighter jet. It is a trainer aircraft.

The report "Meenakshi held" ("Sport", August 20, 2006) said that Woman Grandmaster S. Meenakshi drew with Woman International Master Ioulia Makka of Greece after six rounds of the Acropolis International chess tournament in Athens. The results table said it was after the fifth round. It was after the sixth round. The error was in the results table.

In "Mouma, the star in India's triumph [at the South Asian Games]" ("Sport", August 21, 2006), the text said that Poulomi Ghatak lost to Deepika [in table tennis] while the results table showed that she beat Deepika. The error was again in the results table.

A former Member, Railway Board, says, with reference to the standalone photograph "Dangerous course" (Chennai city, August 21, 2006, page 4): "The photograph has highlighted the risk the children are exposing themselves to by walking on the railway track. But the board in the picture (that says `Caution — Unwired Track ahead') put up by the Railways is not a warning to trespassers, as the caption implied. It is intended to caution drivers of electric locomotives not to go beyond the `wired' (electrified) portion of the track — called the `unwired track'. Otherwise, the locomotive will shut down without overhead power supply and will have to be `pulled out' by a diesel locomotive!" (This detail has been pointed out by other readers as well.)

In the feature "For Women Only — Engineering college with a difference" (Andhra Pradesh August 19, 2006), the blurb said it [the School of Engineering and Technology at the SPMVV campus, Tirupati] "will be the country's first engineering college run exclusively for women." A reader points out that it should have been "... the first university engineering college run exclusively for women". The text gets this detail right.

The heading of the report "Corporation Social Responsibility core groups to be formed" (Tamil Nadu, August 19, 2006, page 5), and the reference to this in the text, should have been "Corporate Social Responsibility core groups to be formed".

The sentence in "It's an act of cowardice, says YSR" (Andhra Pradesh, August 20, 2006, page 1) was: "Explosive material stuffed in a steal container was recovered in the police station, which was partially damaged due to the impact of the explosion." As a reader says, "steal" should have been "steel".

In the report "Annadanam scheme to continue" (Tamil Nadu, August 19, 2006, page 5), the Lakshminarasimha Swamy temple was stated to be atop the Sholingar hills. It should have been the Yoganarasimha Swamy temple.

A reader points out that in the infobox titled "Font issues" ("Fancy! plain goes the number plate", Hyderabad city, August 19, 2006, page 4), "aerobic numerals" should have been "arabic numerals". In the second infobox "Size matters", the measurements listed (340 x 200 mm, or 500 x 120 mm for single line) refer to the sizes of the registration number that can be painted in two lines or in a single line respectively.
