Unfortunate

The natural phenomenon of seawater turning sweet during the monsoon in Mumbai evoked mixed reactions from the people. Some claimed it was a miracle and thronged the sea to get their share of sweet water. It is unfortunate that the people are yet to develop a scientific outlook. Thank god, experts cleared the air before vested interests could exploit the situation.

Inamdar Ramchandra,
Bangalore

It was the wish of Jawaharlal Nehru that our nation should attain a scientific temper. The manner in which people flocked to the Mahim Beach on hearing that the seawater had turned sweet shows it will be centuries before his wish can be realised. Barely had the sweet water `miracle' died down came the rumour of idols of Hindu deities drinking the milk offered to them. This also spread across the country like wildfire and the media had a field day. The only miracle I look forward to is the removal of superstition from the minds of the people.

C.V. Krishnamoorthy,
Bangalore
