Governor plays

good Samaritan

BANGALORE: Governor T.N. Chaturvedi played the role of a good Samaritan in helping the granddaughter of Ustad Bismillah Khan reach Varanasi for his funeral.

Granddaughter Manish Raza, who is studying in Bangalore, approached the Governor on Monday to help her reach Varanasi. In a goodwill gesture, Mr. Chaturvedi agreed to meet the airfare for her trip out of his discretionary grant.

The flight from Bangalore to Lucknow was delayed, and to ensure that Ms. Raza got to Varanasi in time, the Governor, through the Raj Bhavan in Lucknow, arranged for a car for her journey to Varanasi, an official release said. — Staff Reporter

Medical, dental casual vacancy round ends

BANGALORE: The casual vacancy round of the seat selection process for medical and dental courses concluded at the Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell here on Tuesday.

The casual vacancy round for Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy (ISMH) courses for special categories (students with disabilities, NCC and sports) will be held on Wednesday. Eligible candidates with disabilities should come to the CET Cell at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, NCC candidates at 12 noon and sports category students at 2.30 p.m.

The casual vacancy round for these seats under various reserved, rural, Kannada medium and other special categories, including GMR and GMK, will be held on August 24. For general merit and all reserved categories, the casual vacancy round will be on August 26 and 28.

Applications invited

for ITI admissions

BANGALORE: The State Government has invited applications from SSLC passed candidates between 14 and 40 years of age for admission to the newly started Government Industrial Training Institutes at Mundgod, Shikaripur, Jalamangal, Gangavathi and K.R. Pet.

The age limit for those with disabilities and other category candidates is 40 years while the age limit for ex-servicemen and widows is 45 years. Ten per cent grace marks are awarded to rural candidates. Application forms can be obtained from the institutes from Friday and they have to be submitted by September 23. — Staff Reporter

Crediting pension

to joint account

BANGALORE: The Government of India has decided to permit pension of retired Defence personnel to be credited to the joint account operated by them with their spouse if an authorisation for family pension exists in the pension payment order. Details can he had from the district offices of the Department of Sainik Welfare and Resettlement, says an official press release. — Special Correspondent.

Avoid sensationalism, newspapers told

DAVANGERE: Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa has said that some newspapers and journals are guilty of exaggeration and sensationalism in an attempt to boost circulation, which is against journalistic ethics.

Inaugurating the office building of the Kannada daily Samyuktha Karnataka here on Tuesday, Mr. Yediyurappa said newspapers should present the facts and allow readers to draw their own conclusions.

He said many newspapers had played a major role in the freedom struggle. He called upon the press to play a positive role in the development of the country. — Staff Correspondent
