Plan to boost vegetable yield

Drip irrigation gadgets to be set up Rs. 96.67 lakh has been sanctioned for the purpose

PUDUKOTTAI: The Horticulture Department will step up production of vegetables and other horticultural crops in the district through a special subsidy-based micro-irrigation programme.

The focus will be on setting up of drip or sprinkler irrigation gadgets.

The programme would be implemented jointly by the Horticulture, Agriculture and Agricultural Engineering Departments, Collector S. J. Chiru, said.

In a press release issued here, the Collector said a sum of Rs. 96.67 lakh has been sanctioned for the purpose of which Rs. 29 lakh had been allotted to the Horticulture and Agriculture Department each while the balance Rs. 38.67 lakh has been sanctioned to the Agricultural Engineering Department.

Farmers would be eligible for a subsidy of 50 per cent of the value of the sprinkler or drip irrigation equipment.

The balance 50 per cent would be borne by the Central and State Governments.

A district micro irrigation committee, headed by the Collector and comprising officials and representatives of non-governmental organisations has been constituted for its implementation.

The Collector said the programme would benefit small, medium and marginal horticulturists.

However, a beneficiary would be eligible for a maximum of five hectares of horticultural crop in the case of drip irrigation and four hectares for sprinkler irrigation.
