Over 200 rare coins found in Haryana

CHANDIGARH: Over 200 rare coins, made up of copper and silver alloy, have been excavated recently from Panchayat land at Selang village in Mahendargarh district of Haryana, Minister of State for Archaeology Meena Mandal said here on Tuesday.

She said that these coins, weighing 800 grams, had been taken out from an earthern pot found while ploughing the Panchayat land that had been taken on contract by one Sher Singh and was being ploughed by his neighbour Sita Ram. The State Archives Department had already taken possession of these coins.

She said the findings would be ascertained and the coins would then be transferred to the Archaeology Department for conservation and further decoding for the benefit of scholars and historians.

"The coins are said to belong to the post-King Harshavardhan period and span over till the 11th Century."
