Gold recovered

Staff Reporter

GUNTUR: The Guntur rural police on Tuesday arrested five persons for their alleged involvement in kidnap of a goldsmith and decamping with gold ornaments valued at Rs.2.5 lakhs.

Vengala Bhavani Shankar, who worked as clerk with the goldsmith, allegedly masterminded the kidnap of Pirangdasu Sambasiva Rao who was going to Visakhapatnam with 58 grams of gold on July 9. He was accosted into a van at Fire Station junction in Vijayawada and taken to Gannavaram and the nine-member gang demanded Rs.6 lakhs to release him.

Bhavani Shankar, along with four of his accomplices, was produced before the Magistrate in the Mangalagiri court on Tuesday, DSP M. Ravindra Babu said. Four others were absconding.

The kidnappers released Sambasiva Rao, a resident of Atmakur village near Mangalagiri, when they understood that his son Ramesh Babu had informed the police of the ransom. The gold smith had reached home safe. The police could identify the culprits through the photographs of old criminals.
