Defying drought with employment schemes

Collector wants NREGS works sanctioned in drought-hit villages

  • Sanction works that would last for some time: Collector
  • Focus should be on quality of work too
  • Officials asked to settle wage payment delay

ANANTAPUR: Keeping in view the continuing dry spell district Collector Dasari Kadmial has asked the district and mandal-level officials of all key departments to prepare drought mitigation plans. He asked the officials to provide employment to everyone in need.

At a review meeting, he directed MDOs, DWMA officials and mandal engineers to provide jobs under NREGS in every village. Of about 9,000 works taken up under the NREGS 2,307 works were completed so far and Rs. 17 crores paid as wages to labourers. The MDOs were warned against sanctioning works indiscriminately and were asked to focus on quality of works too.

The Collector discouraged the MDOs from sanctioning works like removing pebbles from agriculture fields.

They were asked to allocate works like repairs to supply channels, de-silting of check dams, ponds and tanks, which would last for some time.

    Unspent funds

Funds worth Rs. 2.16 crores meant for drought mitigation works were still lying unspent with a few departments, the Collector stated.

Questioning the MDOs over delay in payment of wages for completed works in Vajrakarur and Somandepalli mandals for two months the Collector asked them to take up the matter with the Project Director of DWMA and settle it at the earliest. He also cautioned the MDOs on the quality of works, particularly in mandals like Gudibanda, where more than Rs. 1 cr. was already paid in wages.

Joint Collector Anita Rajendra and various department officials participated.
