NEW DELHI: The parents of Kakan Banerjee, a 25-year-old resident of Delhi who was swept away by the waters of the Mandakini river near Rudraprayag in Uttaranchal last Thursday, are still awaiting her body. They have urged the Uttaranchal Government to step up efforts to find the body. Kakan, daughter of Homoeopathic physician Kalyan Banerjee, had gone on a four-day trip to Uttaranchal along with three friends. She visited the famous Tunganath Mandir after trekking in the Upper Garhwal Himalayas. On their way back to Delhi, they checked in at a government guest house on the banks of Mandakini at a place called Siyalsaur. According to family sources, the friends accompanying her stated that after lunch last Thursday they went down to the riverside. Around 5 p.m., Kakan got momentarily distracted and was swept away by the swirling waters. Though a search was launched by local police, she could not be traced. Her family members also rushed to Siyalsaur, but had to return empty-handed. They have urged Uttaranchal CM to ask the local administration to step up the search for her body. After her vacation, Kakan was to join National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development here in the Capital for an advanced course. Kakan completed her graduation from Lady Shri Ram College and went on to do her Masters in Social Work from the TISS.
