CHENNAI: The history of erstwhile Madras should be taught in schools, historian and editor `Madras Musings' S. Muthiah said on Tuesday.

He was speaking after receiving the first issue of the special postal cover brought out by the Postal Department to commemorate Madras Day from the Chief Post Master General, Radhika Doraiswamy.

Elaborating on the city's great historical past, Mr. Muthiah said, almost every modern institution established in the country had its origins here.

The Madras Day celebration, he said, was conceived as a people's participatory celebration. It was as much about creating awareness of the rich past as about making people care for the city. This year's celebrations (August 20-27) featured around 50 events. He hoped that next year, the spirit of celebrating history would spread to other post offices and Government offices of the State and Centre.

Besides the CPMG, the Post Master General of Chennai city region T. Paneerselvam, R. Anand, Director of Postal Services and C. Selvaraj, Chief Post Master also participated.
