CHENNAI : There has been a marginal decrease in the inflow of Krishna water into Poondi reservoir, released from Kandaleru reservoir at Andhra Pradesh. Officials here attribute the decline to Andhra Pradesh moves to check for seepage in the canal and illegal tapping in the neighbouring State. The flow into the reservoir came down to around 200 cubic feet per second (cusecs) on Tuesday, from the initial inflow on Sunday of 270 cusecs. The release of Krishna water from Kandaleru reservoir was also slightly lesser, a Public Works department official here said. Water released from the Kandaleru reservoir travels 152 km before reaching Tamil Nadu at Uthukottai, from where it flows to the Poondi reservoir. Andhra Pradesh has assured Tamil Nadu that the release would be stepped up in two or three days after completing the seepage inspection. However, there were no reports of seepage or illegal tapping of the canal in Tamil Nadu, the official added. En route, about 1,080 cusecs of water released from Kandaleru would be diverted to Kalahasti and Tirupathi for domestic consumption. The officials here expect the inflow to increase gradually to about 1,000 cusecs, the full capacity of the canal, and hope to realise about eight thousand million cubic feet. Meanwhile, the outflow from the Poondi reservoir to other lakes has been stopped.
