Architecture student alleges harassment

NEW DELHI: A first year student of School of Planning and Architecture was allegedly harassed by his seniors on the pretext of ragging at its Taimur Nagar hostel in South Delhi on August 10. No arrests have been made in the case so far.

According to the complaint lodged by the victim, who is the son of a senior Army officer from Bihar, he joined the Taimur Nagar hostel on August 13 after clearing the all-India entrance examination. The same day while he was dining at the hostel mess, some seniors asked him to be present in the courtyard in the evening.

Accordingly, he went to the courtyard where over 20 seniors, including girls, were ragging some other freshers. The victim was made to do push-ups and abused by some seniors. After a while, six girl students of the first year were brought there from the institute's ITO hostel. The freshers were then asked to pose in indecent postures. The victim objected at which they allegedly abused him and made him to do more push-ups. The ragging session went on till the early hours of the next morning.

In the meantime, the victim quit the institute and lodged a formal complaint with the police on August 13. Acting on the complaint, the police registered a case on Tuesday and are investigating.

Delhi Zoo to remain closed today

NEW DELHI: Delhi Zoo will remain closed on Wednesday following a one-day strike announced by the employees. The employees are protesting against the Central Zoo Authority's proposal to convert the zoo into an autonomous body or registered society.

The employees claim that for over a month they have been asking the Union Environment and Forests Ministry to look into matter and are now forced to go on strike after getting no positive response from the Ministry.

Encroachments removed

NEW DELHI: Continuing its drive against illegal constructions in the Capital, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Tuesday removed encroachments from public land at Old Lajpat Rai Market in Chandni Chowk. Similarly, unauthorised structures were razed in Tughlakhabad Extension and Karol Bagh.

More than two-dozen illegal structures that were obstructing public movement were razed in Lajpat Rai Market. The demolition action in the market will continue on Wednesday also.

In Tughlakhabad Extension, the civic body's demolition squads targeted ongoing unauthorised constructions in at least two residential complexes, while encroachments on public land were removed from the main road and lanes on Bhishma Pitamah Marg in South Delhi.

On Rama Road in Karol Bagh, at least half-a-dozen unauthorised structures were razed, including a huge basement illegally being used for commercial purposes. The demolition drive in the zone will continue on Wednesday.

Woman sent to

police custody

NEW DELHI: The woman who was arrested at New Delhi railway station on Monday for allegedly trafficking a young woman has been remanded to police custody till Wednesday by a court here.

During interrogation, accused Rukmini allegedly confessed to her involvement in the trafficking of two women. The police claim to have recovered a diary from her containing the telephone numbers of over a dozen people operating from brothels on G.B. Road here. Half-a-dozen numbers in the diary are being suspected to be of those operating from Mumbai brothels.
