KOCHI: The Young Men's Association of Panangad is planning to revive the Panangad boat race as a tourist attraction. The Panangad boat race has a history that dates back to 1975. The race used to be held as a village festival of Kumbalam during the month of `Chingam.' `Panangad Boat Race 2006' will be held on the `Thiruvonam' day (September 5). Minister for Fisheries S. Sarma will inaugurate the boat race at 2.30 p.m. The association plans to make it an annual event with added attractions to draw people. The boat race will be held on a 900-metre straight stretch of backwater between Cheppanam and Panangad. The location has been selected considering the width of the banks to accommodate people coming to witness the event. There will be tableaux, on country boats, of Thiruvathira, Ammankudam and Kathakali, among other traditional art forms. The organisers claimed to have enough sponsorship for the programme. There was also a reportedly good response from those wanting to participate. Those wanting to register may call 9846 172481 For those seeking to join the celebrations on the `Thiruvonam' day, Panangad is located 2 km from Madavana Junction on the Alappuzha-Ernakulam stretch of National Highway 47.
