Vidyapeetha students welcome Kumaraswamy

    GULBARGA: Students of the Sri Vedesha Tirtha Vidyapeetha on the banks of the Bhima in Hire Mannur village in Afzalpur taluk had a pleasant surprise when Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy visited the Vidyapeetha and paid obeisance to the Brindavana of 12th century saint and philosopher Sri Madhwa Tirtha, Sri Vedesha Tirtha and Sri Govind Vodeyar.

    Mr. Kumaraswamy visited the Vidyapeetha and Brindavana which was submerged in the floods, to assess the damage. He was received by Vice-Chancellor of the Vidyapeeta, Anantacharya Akkamanchi, to the singing of Vedic hymns by the 40-odd students of the Vidyapeetha.

    Mr. Kumaraswamy sanctioned Rs. 25,000 from his personal funds to Vidyapeetha to compensate the loss of foodgrains stored there for students. He promised to look into the demands for providing funds for development of Vidyapeetha, which was founded by Vedesha Tirtha in 15th century.

    Later, the Chief Minister paid a visit to the ancient Yellamma temple in the village. He also visited the famous Chennakesava Temple and the Hasan Hussain Makan Dargah and the Jain temple in the village. He also announced the sanction of a Rs. 72-lakh project for constructing a bridge from Hire Mannur to the Old Yellamma Temple in the river. The construction work would be executed by the Karnataka Neeravari Nigama.

    Addressing flood-hit families in the village at the relief camp, the Chief Minister made a fervent appeal to the farmers in distress not to commit suicide. He said the Government would assist the farmers in distress in a big way. Besides doubling the compensation amount to farmers who had lost their crops, the Government was also considering various options to provide relief to farmers who had taken crop loans from banks, he said.
