Milan reaches group stage

LONDON: Former champions AC Milan and Liverpool advanced to the group stage of the Champions League on Tuesday — six-time titlist Milan beating Red Star Belgrade 2-1 and Liverpool drawing 1-1 with Maccabi Haifa to stay in search of its sixth crown.

Two-time winner Benfica also made it after a 3-0 victory over Austria Magna. Another former champion, SV Hamburg, reached the group stage when a 1-1 draw at Spain's Osasuna sent the Bundesliga club through on away goals.

A two-time runner-up, Valencia beat Red Bull Salzburg 3-0 to advance with a 3-1 aggregate. Initially banned from the competition, Milan was given a reprieve on appeal and allowed back in at the third qualifying round.

The results: Valencia bt SV Red Bull Salzburg 3-0; Osasuna drew with Hamburg 1-1; Maccabi Haifa drew with Liverpool 1-1; Red Star Belgrade lost to AC Milan 2-1; Benfica bt Austria Magna 3-0. — AP
