HAL to increase outsourcing business volume

Staff Reporter

Bangalore : Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) would outsource more than Rs.500 crore of its business volume to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), said HAL managing director A.K.Saxena on Wednesday.

Speaking at the inaugural session of a seminar on `SMEs- Opportunities for Strategic Growth', Mr. Saxena said that HAL had outsourced business to the tune of Rs. 285 crore to 1300 SMEs across the country, including 600 in Karnataka, last year. It was looking at increasing outsourcing to 25 per cent from the current 10 per cent, he said.

Business activities outsourced included sheet metals, Research and Development and manufacturing of precision tools, test equipment and other engineering services, he said. This was according to the Centre's defence procurement policy, which required that 30 per cent of engineering services be outsourced, he said.

Mr. Saxena said that export trade volume of HAL was likely to increase to more than Rs. 2000- 3000 crore in the next five to ten years from Rs. 200 crore.

Stating that with liberalisation had opened up challenges to SMEs in the country, he urged entrepreneurs to improve the technological levels in the industry as customers now were looking for the best quality products.

He also asked SMEs to ensure speedy delivery of services and place more emphasis on marketing and customer care.

A. A. Badshah, Zonal Manager of Bank of India, said that the bank had given out finances to the tune of Rs. 750 crore to SMEs in Karnataka and were planning to increase it to about 40 per cent more this year.

The bank was looking at providing package concessions that could be easily accessed instead of having entrepreneurs approach the bank for every single transaction, he said.
