UPSET WIN: Mohd. Fariz pulled off some incredible winners to oust top seed Sumit Gupta.
CHENNAI: Mohd. Fariz of Tamil Nadu stunned top seed Sumit Prakash Gupta of Uttar Pradesh 7-6(2), 6-7(6), 6-3 to storm into the boys' under-18 quarterfinals of the MCC-adidas junior National tennis championship at the Madras Cricket Club courts here on Wednesday. In a match that lasted over three-and-a-half hours, Fariz pulled off some incredible winners from the baseline. However, the 18-year-old made several unforced errors too, especially while going for smashes. Against a more aggressive Sumit, Fariz maintained his composure and made each rally count in crucial situations to emerge the winner. He will clash with Sushant Nambiar of Andhra Pradesh in the next round.

Chennai lad Tariq Jacob matched Vishnu Rajam from the baseline and overpowered the 6'7'' lad 5-7, 6-0, 6-4 in nearly two hours. Tariq will face Allan Gomes in the quarterfinals.
