Diabetes treatment facilities in PHCs to be improved

Details of new courses at varsity given

Pondicherry: The Government would augment facilities for treatment of diabetic patients in Primary Health Centres in the Union Territory, said Health Minister E. Valsaraj in the Assembly here on Tuesday. He was replying to a question by R.K.R. Anandharaman (Pattali Makkal Katchi) during the question hour.

He said a diabetic clinic was already functioning on the premises of the Government general hospital here and insulin injections were being given at the PHCs.

Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan told S.P. Sivakumar (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) that the Government would write to the University Grants Commission to ensure that the Central University in Pondicherry earmarked 25% of the total seats in the new courses in the departments for the students of Pondicherry.

He furnished the details of the courses the University had started during 2005-2006 and in 2006-2007.

Reservation

Mr. Sivakumar asked the Minister whether the 25 percent reservation for local students was adopted in the new courses and added that the facility was denied now.

He said the Pondicherry Government had placed at the disposal of the University around 800 acres free of cost for a project some decades ago. But local students were left in the lurch.

Mr. Shahjahan told the member that the Government would write to the UGC in this regard and ensure that the quota for Pondicherry students was available.
