Seek upward revision of basic wages for Group D workers; introduction of Assured Career Progression scheme

PROTEST: Members of the Federation of the Unions of Municipal and Commune Panchayat Workers stage a dharna in Bharathi Park opposite the Assembly in Pondicherry on Wednesday.

Pondicherry: Members of the Pondicherry municipal and commune panchayat workers' union held a demonstration in Bharathi Park opposite the Assembly here on Wednesday in support of their charter of demands.

The general secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress (to which the union is affiliated) V.S. Abishegam, led the demonstration.

Demands

The workers wanted among other things upward revision of the basic wages for the Group D workers, regularisation of the workers in civic bodies on the same lines as was done for their counterparts in the Public Works Department and a few other departments, payment of risk allowance, introduction of the Assured Career Progression scheme, adequate funds for the municipal bodies to implement the schemes as well as housing facilities for the workers.
