KANNUR: Director-General of Police (DGP) Raman Srivastava has said that efforts are under way to ensure accountability in the functioning of the police force and to make it people-friendly. Talking to reporters after a meeting of district police officers here on Wednesday, Mr. Srivastava said that district-level meetings of police officers were being convened with the aim of improving the efficiency of the force. From October onwards, he would be visiting each district a month to hold public adalats to hear grievances of the public. The adalats would increase accountability of the police in the State.
Instructions to officers
The DGP said police officers had been given clear instruction that no `third degree' methods or assaults would be allowed in police stations as part of investigation of cases. Even small complaints against police officers would be taken very seriously. The officers had been instructed to take steps to reduce number of pending cases under investigation. Mr. Srivastava said that senior officers had been asked to do surprise visits in police stations. While public complaint against the police would be given top priority, they were instructed to give special care to women, children and people belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Asked about the High Court's strictures on the police in the Sabarimala Tantri case, Mr. Srivastava said that the Additional DGP Rajendra Madekar had been ordered to do an inquiry into the issue.
