chief murdered

VILLUPURAM: Former president of the Bommaiyarpalayam Panchayat J. Arul Raj was murdered by a group of unidentified persons on Wednesday.

Arul Raj was travelling in his Sumo from Bommaiyarpalayam to Pondicherry when a blue Maruti car blocked the vehicle. The occupants of the car got down and lobbed four crude bombs on the Sumo. As the place was engulfed by smoke, the assailants hacked Arul Raj to death.

He died on the spot, while his driver sustained injuries. The gang fled the scene.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Rajeev Kumar and Superintendent of Police K. Periaiah rushed to the spot along with a contingent of police personnel.

Three police teams have been formed to trace the gang. Though the motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained, it is believed that it could be due to personal enmity or political rivalry.
