Former panchayat
chief murdered
Arul Raj was travelling in his Sumo from Bommaiyarpalayam to Pondicherry when a blue Maruti car blocked the vehicle. The occupants of the car got down and lobbed four crude bombs on the Sumo. As the place was engulfed by smoke, the assailants hacked Arul Raj to death. He died on the spot, while his driver sustained injuries. The gang fled the scene. Deputy Inspector General of Police Rajeev Kumar and Superintendent of Police K. Periaiah rushed to the spot along with a contingent of police personnel. Three police teams have been formed to trace the gang. Though the motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained, it is believed that it could be due to personal enmity or political rivalry. Arul Raj was said to have been the consensus candidate for the panchayat president post. Special Correspondent

"Ban organisations supporting LTTE"
Noting that the organisations were not raising voice in support of Sri Lankan Tamils, Mr. Anbarasu said if no action was taken against them, there was every apprehension that Tamil Nadu would become a violence-prone State. "If the Government does not arrest the leaders of such organisations, I will bring together like-minded Rajiv loyalists and go on a fast till death," he said in a statement. Special Correspondent
