CHENNAI: Law Minister I. Periasami informed the Assembly on Wednesday that the government was willing to talk to the agitating students of a private law college in Salem. Replying to a calling attention motion tabled by D. Jayakumar (AIADMK), the Minister said that it was the AIADMK government that allowed the hike in fee and a High Court Bench had reduced it. Mr. Jayakumar contended that the government was not taking note of the agitation. Later, participating in the debate on the demands for grants of the Industries and Information Technology departments, Mr. Jayakumar claimed that the AIADMK government was responsible for rapid industrialisation of the State and also for bringing in unprecedented amount of foreign direct investment (FDI). The DMK government was merely taking credit for the work done by the AIADMK government, he said. Quoting statistics from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, M. Appavu (DMK) said that in the five years of the AIADMK regime from 2001-02 to 2005-06, the total FDI inflow was Rs.3,710 crore. In the five years of the DMK regime earlier from 1995-96 to 2000-01, it was Rs.11,126 crore. C. Govindasamy (CPI-M) welcomed the intention of the government to introduce Value Added Tax system and wanted the government to take steps to further fuel the economic growth of Tamil Nadu. He said that the government should also take steps to ensure that unemployment problem was contained.
More transformers
Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy said that the Electricity Board (EB) was in the process of installing 4,000 transformers across the State to provide quality power. Replying to a question from R. Gnanadoss (MDMK) during question hour, the Minister said that the EB had floated tenders to procure another 10,000 transformers. Once these were available, the low voltage complaints would cease. Replying to another question from B. Ranganathan (DMK), the Minister said that the government would install by the end of the year additional transformers and electric posts to regulate power supply in the suburbs of Chennai.
Criterion to change
Responding to a question from D. Ravikumar (DPI), School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu said that the government would consider the suggestion to remove the price as the main criterion for classifying books as reference category in government libraries. Mr. Ravikumar had pointed out that books costing over Rs.100 were now classified as reference.
