Talha

Bangalore: The tragedy that engulfed thousands of people on the fateful day, December 26, 2004, refuses to end in the case of a family from Udhagamandalam.

The relatives of Talha, then three years old, who went missing in Cuddalore when the tsunami hit, are still looking for the child. The boy was rescued at that time but went missing again.

His brother Thanveer, eight years old at the time of the tragedy, is the only surviving member of the family, apart from Talha, and is eagerly awaiting the return of his younger brother.

After having searched everywhere in Cuddalore and neighbouring areas, including all orphanages, Talha's uncle and well-wishers have arrived in Bangalore to search for the child.

Talha's uncle, G. Umar Farouk, who runs a play school in Udhagamandalam, told presspersons here on Wednesday that they had received information that the child may have been taken to Karnataka. "We want to appeal through the media so that whoever is in possession of the child may come forward," he said.

The family consisting of Saifulla, 36, his wife, Parveen, 26, and children Thanveer, Talha and Bilal, 1, had come to Cuddalore by car on a vacation and were at Silver Beach when the tsunami struck.

Except for Thanveer and Talha, all the others died.

Thanveer managed to escape by holding on to a wall.

"We know the boy is alive as the Cuddalore district Superintendent of Police, S. Pannerselvam, himself rescued Talha from the car with the help of fishermen. But in the chaos, the boy went missing on the way to hospital," Mr. Farouk said.

"We want to re-unite him with his brother, whatever effort it may take," he said.

Those who have any information may contact Mr. Farouk on phone nos. 0423-2441917, 2449798 or 09843141917.
