Kottayam, Alappuzha pick up two points

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The two-day South Zone inter-district U-19 cricket match between Kottayam and Pathanamthitta ended in a draw at the Agriculture College ground, Vellayani here on Wednesday.

However, Kottayam took the honours after taking the vital first innings lead and ended the tie with two points.

Kottayam, which was struggling at 84 for four at the end of the first day, rode on the resilience of its tail to take the lead and bundled out Pathanamthitta for 133 runs in the second innings.

But, Kottayam didn't have enough overs to force an outright win.

At Kollam, the Kollam-Alappuzha encounter also ended in draw. But Alappuzha grabbed a three-run first innings lead to take two points.

Half-centuries from Pradeep R. Pillai (68) and Saji (60) was instrumental in Alappuzha overhauling Kollam's total.

The scores:

Pathanamthitta 217 in 68.4 overs (Nripin P. Nair 40, Jibin 39, Biswajith four for 10) and 133 in 38.1 overs (Bency 33, Nimish Latheef five for 27, Nithin S. Kumar three for 30) drew with Kottayam 220 in 58.4 overs (Nithin S. Kumar 38, Philip four for 79, Nripin P. Nair three for 61) and 28 for two in 7 overs (Nripin P. Nair two for 11).

Kollam 223 in 67.5 overs (Zulfikar 47, Jenu 42, Jasin Oscar three for 45, Tinku two for 32) and 183 for six in 47 overs (Anoop 68, Zulfikar 57 not out, Pradeep R. Pillai two for 45) drew with Alappuzha 226 in 58 overs (Pradeep R. Pillai 68, Saji 60, Anus seven for 42, Zulfikar two for 57).

Kannur takes lead

Host Kannur took the first-innings lead against Wayanad in the North Zone (under-19) inter-district cricket match, which ended in a draw at Thalassery on Wednesday.

On the second and final day, Wayanad was dismissed in its first innings for 167, replying to Kannur's 271. The host got two points.

The scores: Kannur 271 for nine and 32 for four in 10.3 overs drew with Wayanad 167 in 66.4 overs (Aneesh 48, Anoop 42, Rizwaan four for 44, K. Rishad three for 17).
