Industrialists urged to set up units in Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy on Tuesday urged industrialists to set up units and power production plants in the State.

Presenting the Confederation of Indian Industry's awards for excellence in energy management here, he said the State Government would provide all assistance to investors. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, on assumption of office, had extended an invitation in this regard.

The Government had signed memoranda of understanding with four major corporate houses.

Claming that the State had one of the most reliable power supply systems, Mr. Veerasamy said 749 megawatts was expected to be added to the existing capacity of 10,111 MW by year-end.

Wind power

The Minister said the State accounted for about 60 per cent of the nation's total installed capacity of 5,200 MW in wind power.

The installation of solar water heating systems had been made mandatory in certain types of buildings in Chennai and municipal towns. R. Satapathy, Principal Secretary, Energy in the State Government, wanted the industrialists to take to renewable energy sources in a big way.

Hans Raj Verma, chairman of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, spoke. K. Vasudevan, chairman, CII's Energy Summit 2006, and G. Jayaraman, chief of the National Award for Excellence in Energy Management, said this year the award scheme had been extended to cover two more classifications — one for innovative energy efficient products/ services and the other for individuals who popularised the concept of energy efficient management.

Bajaj Auto Limited, Waluj, Aurangabad; Brakes India Limited, Foundry Division, Sholinghur; Hindustan Newsprint Limited, Kottayam; ICICI Bank Limited, Mumbai; Madras Cements Limited, Alathiyur; and Reliance Industries Limited, Hazira, were among those which received the award for excellent energy efficient units.
