Students of the Department of Hotel Management and Catering Science, Sri Kaliswari College, Sivakasi, had a demonstration by V. Poorna Kumar of Madurai of the preparation of various bakery products such as puffs, cheese straw, homemade ice cream, birthday cake, pastries and other fancy cake recently. The programme was inaugurated by K. Rajakumar, principal. P. Srinivasan, department head and A. Rajendran, vice-principal spoke. A lecture on `Application of statistical tools in business research' was delivered in the college by D. Kadhambarajan, Principal of S.S. Duraisamy Nadar Mariammal College, Kovilpatti. The seminar was organised by the Commerce Department for postgraduate students and M. Phil. scholars on Friday.
An elocution competition was held on the topic `National integration and communal harmony' on Friday to mark `sadbhavana diwas,' the birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at Sankaralingam Bhuwameswari College of Pharmacy, Sivakasi.
A two-day State-level conference on `recent advancements in graph theory and its applications' was organised by the Department of Mathematics of Standard Fireworks Rajaratnam College for Women, Sivakasi, on August 18 and 19. The conference, sponsored by University Grants Commission, was inaugurated by K. Veluthambi, Dean (Research and Development), Madurai Kamaraj University. A series of eight lectures were given by eminent scholars, who spoke on graph theory and its applications. The valedictory address was delivered by K. Iyakutti, Dean, (Academic - Teaching and Computerisation), Madurai Kamaraj University. Twenty-three papers were presented.
A Kids-Kit training camp was jointly organised by Social Service League of Standard Fireworks Rajaratnam College for Women, Sivakasi, and Sakthi-Vidiyal, Madurai, on August 14 and 15. Topics such as child psychology and child rights were dealt with in this seminar. Training was also given in organising camps for economically and socially deprived children, orphans and physically challenged. About 130 students participated in the skill-oriented sessions.
A huge gap exists between employment availability and employable graduates, according to K. Rajadurai, Regional Marketing Coordinator, ICFAI, Chennai. He was delivering the keynote at GTN Arts College in Dindigul recently. He said despite the availability of many jobs, rural students find it difficult to get placement because of their poor interpersonal and communication skills. Quality education alone would to reduce the gap and make average students employable, he said.
A free eye camp was conducted in P.S.N.A. College of Engineering and Technology, Dindigul, in association with Arvind Eye Hospital and Rotary Club of Dindigul recently. A total of 486 people were benefited. A total of 161 were referred for cataract operation and 100 for advanced treatment at Madurai Arvind Hospital. People from Silvarpatti, Alagupatti, Kannimanuthu, Reddiyarchatram and Kannivadi took part.
Students should be creative and positive and exhibit their hidden talents through various activities and competitions, said Samayanallur Parish Priest James Paul Raj. He was addressing a function to mark the inauguration of the college union at Jayaraj Annapakiam College for Women at Periakulam recently. The Principal Yesu Thangam installed Arockia Vennila as president of the union and her team members as office-bearers.
Students of H.K.R.H. College at Uthamapalayam took out an awareness rally in many villages around the college to mark the Rajiv Gandhi Renewable Energy Day. The rally started from the college premises and reached the college again after passing through Pudhur, Kurumbapatti, Ammapatti, Ellapatti, Margaiyankottai, Iyampatti, Pulikutthi Melasinthalcherry Keezhasinthalcherry, Pallavarayanpatti, Pannaipuram and Kombai.
The `Life time achievement gold medal award' was given to A. Mustafa, Principal, Syed Hameedha Arts and Science College, Kilakarai, for his contribution to the development of education. The International Institute of Education and Management, New Delhi, and the Indian Solidarity Council presented this award to Mr. Mustafa at a function held in New Delhi.
