BHOPAL: The Bharatiya Janshakti Party president and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Uma Bharti, appeared in a court here on Wednesday in connection with a defamation case. A bailable warrant was issued against her in the case filed by the All-India Congress Committee general secretary and former Chief Minister, Digvijay Singh. Mr. Singh had filed the case against Ms. Bharti on November 17, 2003, when he was the Chief Minister. Ms. Bharti, who was the chief ministerial candidate and leading the Bharatiya Janata Party's campaign for the Assembly elections, had alleged at a press conference that Mr. Singh was involved in massive corruption. The Bhopal Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) S.N. Dixit had taken cognisance of the complaint by Mr. Singh under Section 500 of IPC and summoned Ms. Bharti. The local court had ordered in October 2004 that a non-bailable arrest warrant be issued against Ms. Bharti if she failed to appear before it. Later, a bailable warrant was issued against her. Talking to mediapersons, Ms. Bharti said her party would decide on August 30 on contesting the coming Vidisha Parliamentary bypoll for the seat vacated by Chief Minister S.S. Chauhan and the Malehra Assembly bypoll for the seat vacated by her.
