Rain in many Punjab, Himachal areas

Met office predicts moderate to heavy rain or thundershowers

Chandigarh: Rain lashed many areas in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh during the past 24 hours. Moderate to heavy rain pounded some areas in Punjab with Nangal Dam site turning the wettest place recording 93.2 mm rainfall till Wednesday morning. Balachour measured 53.1 mm, Madopur 18 mm, Ranjit Sagar Dam site 5.4 mm and Shahpur Kandi 2.0 mm rainfall. Rains also lashed Amritsar.

Certain areas in Haryana also experienced rain with Karnal recording 5.8 mm and Ambala 0.1 mm.

Moderate rain lashed many areas in Himachal Pradesh, including mid and lower hills, triggering fresh landslides in the State. Some areas in Kangra, Mandi and Kullu district reported heavy rainfall.

Sundernagar with 43.2 mm rainfall was the wettest place in the State, followed by Gamroor registering 31.2 mm, Pandoh 29.0 mm, Nagrota Surian 28.8 mm, Guler 20.5 mm, Chamba 18.6 mm and Barthin 16.4 mm. Kasol, Bhang-Manali, Solang Nullah, Dhundi, Kasol, Rampur and Kalpa were also lashed by rain.

Moderate rain lashed Shimla and tourist resorts of Wildflower Hall, Kufri, Naldehra and Narkanda last night. The Capital town recorded 14.7 mm rainfall till morning. Chandigarh and its adjoining areas also received rain overnight, providing respite to people from hot weather conditions. The city, which was enveloped in monsoon clouds during the day, recorded 34.8 mm rain.

The Met Office predicted moderate to rather heavy rain or thundershowers at many places in Himachal Pradesh and few places in Haryana and Punjab during the next 24 hours.

It warned of heavy rain at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh and north-eastern parts of Punjab and Haryana during the period. -- UNI
