HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has argued that the Telangana region has made tremendous progress in every sphere during the last two years of the Congress rule. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday he said: "The Government has done its best to develop the region. We are satisfied with our achievements here." Refuting the argument of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) that the region had witnessed no development, Dr. Reddy said: "On the contrary, it has received a lion's share in every activity.
Migration stops
"After the advent of our Government, migration from the region has stopped. The poor and the downtrodden have benefited from the implementation of rural employment guarantee programme. Employment opportunities have improved due to industrial and IT development. Irrigation packages announced for the region would lead to prosperity everywhere soon," he said. In the irrigation sector, Telangana had been allocated Rs.6,601.11 crores in the last two years while Andhra and Rayalaseema regions received Rs.2,931.66 crores and Rs.2,289.86 crores respectively. Twenty-one major projects were underway in the region while five more costing Rs.30, 677 crores were being contemplated. Investments to the tune of Rs.2,000.57 crores were made in the power sector in Telangana against Rs.1,072.4 crores in coastal Andhra and Rs.707 crores in Rayalaseema. The region secured 59.15 per cent of the agricultural services, 94.8 per cent of the total employment created in the last two years in the IT sector (62,444 jobs for Telangana while only 3,400 in the rest of the State) and 49.7 per cent of the industrial jobs created after the Congress came back to power. Releasing press clippings of TRS president K. Chandrasekhara Rao's briefing in New Delhi on May 30, 2005, he said: "Mr. Rao patted me for the development. How can anyone say we are neglecting the region?"
