HYDERABAD: Rain lashed parts of Srikakulam district and the adjoining areas in Orissa under the influence of low-pressure area on Wednesday. The Vamsadhara and Nagavali rivers that flow on either side of Srikakulam town, rose again slightly following heavy inflows. Some low-lying areas like Karakavalasa were inundated. Further threat of heavy rain to the North Coastal Andhra, however, has subsided as the low-pressure area moved over to West Bengal, Bihar and Chhattisgarh without intensifying into a depression. Indications are that the system may weaken and dissipate. For the 24-hour period ending 8.30 a.m. Wednesday, there was rain at a few places in Coastal Andhra and it was isolated in Telangana and Rayalaseema. Chintalapudi, Tanuku, Parvatipuram recorded a rainfall of 4 cm each; Palasa, Patapatnam, Veeraghattam 3 cm each, and Bobbili, Komarada, Dowleswaram, Palakonda and Tadepalligudem 2 cm each. According to a forecast, light to moderate rain is likely at a few places in the State on Thursday. Meanwhile, both the Godavari and the Krishna are flowing below their first warning level throughout their course in the State. The inflows reaching Srisailam tumbled to 3 lakh cusecs and similarly, the outflow of the Godavari from Dowleswaram fell to four lakh cusecs.
Water discharge
Srikakulam Special writes: The Vamsadhara river is in spate again. It is for the third time that it is in spate in the last 40 days. According to authorities at Gotta Barrage across Vamsadhara, the discharge was 59,680 cusecs by 5 p.m. and the first warning was hoisted when the discharge crossed 40,000 cusecs discharge mark. The second warning would be hoisted when the discharge would be 80,000 cusecs and above. According to authorities at Gotta Barrage, there was 20 cm in the catchment area of the river in Orissa. However the water level has stabilised and it is likely to recede. According to reports reaching here, large areas have been waterlogged in areas like Karakavalasa, Dompaka, Sirusuvada, etc. where huge breaches caused by the floods in July and August remain unattended. The water level in Nagavali is also rising steadily. The discharge at the Naraynapur project is 40,000, well below the first warning level mark.
