Maoists justify slaying

of policemen

HYDERABAD: The CPI (Maoist) has justified the killing of three policemen in a raid on the Atmakur police station in Nalgonda district by stating the Government was using the civil police and home guards as informers. In a statement on Wednesday, Maoist spokesman Janardhan said the Government had to take responsibility for the death of the policemen. . - Staff Reporter

Paritala case postponed

ANANTAPUR: The District and Sessions Court on Wednesday adjourned the Paritala Ravindra murder case to September 6. All the accused in the case in judicial custody were presented through videoconference. Meanwhile, one of the accused T. Konda Reddy filed a petition seeking bail and his shifting from a Hyderabad jail to the district jail near here. - Staff Reporter

Benefits withheld

HYDERABAD: The pension and gratuity of a retired Line Inspector of Central Power Distribution Company of Andhra Pradesh Limited S. Raja has been withheld following his conviction in a corruption case. Twelve years ago, ACB officials had registered a case against him on charge of receiving Rs. 5,000 bribe from a complainant. In a similar case, pension and gratuity of another employee of CPDCL, Dusa Ramulu, who was convicted in a corruption case, have also been withheld. - Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The Government has held back the pension and gratuity of a former Sub-Inspector of Prohibition and Excise Department R. Basavaiah as a special court recently sentenced him to two years' rigorous imprisonment in a corruption case. - Staff Reporter

Maid ends life in Manama

Dubai: An Indian woman, working as a housemaid, has allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in Manama. Ramanna Jayamangala, 39, hailing from Andhra Pradesh, was reportedly upset over an affair with a man in Saudi Arabia, media reports quoting her sister said. Meanwhile, the fate of another Indian housemaid who filed a case against her Bahraini sponsor for alleged assault, breach of contract and unpaid salary, is still uncertain. Sajitha Beevi, 30, has been under the custody of the Indian Embassy since July 25.

Doctor commits suicide

ELURU: Bellani Matsyakanta Raghuprala Suneeta (33), a lady doctor at a private diagnostic centre, allegedly committed suicide in her flat on Tuesday night by consuming pesticide. According to the victim's mother Janaki Vasundara, harassment at the workplace was the reason for the suicide. The victim is survived by two children and husband Narendra, who is doing MS in Khammam. - Staff Reporter

Hostel for disabled

Sangareddy: The Government has sanctioned a new hostel for orthopaedically disabled students with intake capacity of 100 at Sangareddy. According to a press release by the Assistant Director of the Disabled Welfare Department only boys of classes 1 to 10 whose parents or guardians' annual income is below Rs. 12,000 can apply for admission. Applications should reach the Assistant Director on or before August 31. - Staff Reporter

Award for teacher

HYDERABAD: Md. Hafeez, Dean, Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University, Tirupati has bagged the Bharat Ratna Dr. C. Subramaniam Award for outstanding teachers for 2004-05. The ICAR award was given to Dr. Hafeez at a function in New Delhi on August 18. - Staff Reporter
